Медаль «За отличие в воинской службе»

It was nominally a union of national republics, but its government. In , the communists were victorious, forming the Soviet Union with the unification of the Russian, Transcaucasian, Ukrainian, following Lenins death in , a collective leadership and a brief power struggle, Joseph Stalin came to power in the mids.

Stalin suppressed all opposition to his rule, committed the state ideology to Marxism—Leninism. As a result, the country underwent a period of rapid industrialization and collectivization which laid the foundation for its victory in World War II and postwar dominance of Eastern Europe.

Soviet war casualties accounted for the highest proportion of the conflict in the effort of acquiring the upper hand over Axis forces at battles such as Stalingrad. Soviet forces eventually captured Berlin in , the territory overtaken by the Red Army became satellite states of the Eastern Bloc.

Following Stalins death in , a period of political and economic liberalization, known as de-Stalinization and Khrushchevs Thaw, the country developed rapidly, as millions of peasants were moved into industrialized cities. In the mids, the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, sought to reform and liberalize the economy through his policies of glasnost.

The goal was to preserve the Communist Party while reversing the economic stagnation, the Cold War ended during his tenure, and in Soviet satellite countries in Eastern Europe overthrew their respective communist regimes.

It failed, with Russian President Boris Yeltsin playing a role in facing down the coup. On 25 December , Gorbachev resigned and the twelve constituent republics emerged from the dissolution of the Soviet Union as independent post-Soviet states 2.

Russia — Russia, also officially the Russian Federation, is a country in Eurasia. The European western part of the country is more populated and urbanised than the eastern. Russias capital Moscow is one of the largest cities in the world, other urban centers include Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod.

Extending across the entirety of Northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe, Russia spans eleven time zones and incorporates a range of environments. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk, the East Slavs emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD.

Founded and ruled by a Varangian warrior elite and their descendants, in it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium.

Rus ultimately disintegrated into a number of states, most of the Rus lands were overrun by the Mongol invasion. The Soviet era saw some of the most significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including the worlds first human-made satellite and the launching of the first humans in space.

By the end of , the Soviet Union had the second largest economy, largest standing military in the world. It is governed as a federal semi-presidential republic, the Russian economy ranks as the twelfth largest by nominal GDP and sixth largest by purchasing power parity in Russias extensive mineral and energy resources are the largest such reserves in the world, making it one of the producers of oil.

The country is one of the five recognized nuclear weapons states and possesses the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction, Russia is a great power as well as a regional power and has been characterised as a potential superpower.

The name Russia is derived from Rus, a state populated mostly by the East Slavs. In order to distinguish this state from other states derived from it, it is denoted as Kievan Rus by modern historiography, an old Latin version of the name Rus was Ruthenia, mostly applied to the western and southern regions of Rus that were adjacent to Catholic Europe.

There are two Russian words which are translated into English as Russians 3. Previously, from August to December, all the individual republics, the week before the unions formal dissolution,11 republics signed the Alma-Ata Protocol formally establishing the CIS and declaring that the Soviet Union had ceased to exist.

Mikhail Gorbachev was elected General Secretary by the Politburo on March 11,, Gorbachev, aged 54, was the youngest member of the Politburo. His initial goal as general secretary was to revive the Soviet economy, the reforms began with personnel changes of senior Brezhnev-era officials who would impede political and economic change.

He kept the power ministries happy by promoting KGB Head Viktor Chebrikov from candidate to full member and this liberalisation, however, fostered nationalist movements and ethnic disputes within the Soviet Union.

Under Gorbachevs leadership, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in introduced limited competitive elections to a new central legislature, in May , Gorbachev delivered a speech in Leningrad advocating reforms and an anti-alcohol campaign to tackle widespread alcoholism.

Prices of vodka, wine, and beer were raised in order to make these drinks more expensive and a disincentive to consumers, unlike most forms of rationing intended to conserve scarce goods, this was done to restrict sales with the overt goal of curtailing drunkenness.

Gorbachevs plan also included billboards promoting sobriety, increased penalties for public drunkenness, however, Gorbachev soon faced the same adverse economic reaction to his prohibition as did the last Tsar. The disincentivization of alcohol consumption was a blow to the state budget according to Alexander Yakovlev.

Alcohol production migrated to the market, or through moonshining as some made bathtub vodka with homegrown potatoes. The purpose of these reforms, however, was to prop up the centrally planned economy, unlike later reforms.

The latter, disparaged as Mr Nyet in the West, had served for 28 years as Minister of Foreign Affairs, gromyko was relegated to the largely ceremonial position of Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, as he was considered an old thinker. In the fall of , Gorbachev continued to bring younger, at the next Central Committee meeting on October 15, Tikhonov retired from the Politburo and Talyzin became a candidate.

The army was established immediately after the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks raised an army to oppose the military confederations of their adversaries during the Russian Civil War. In September , Vladimir Lenin wrote, There is only one way to prevent the restoration of the police, at the time, the Imperial Russian Army had started to collapse.

The Tsarist general Nikolay Dukhonin estimated that there had been 2 million deserters,1. Therefore, the Council of Peoples Commissars decided to form the Red Army on 28 January and they envisioned a body formed from the class-conscious and best elements of the working classes.

All citizens of the Russian republic aged 18 or older were eligible, in the event of an entire unit wanting to join the Red Army, a collective guarantee and the affirmative vote of all its members would be necessary. Because the Red Army was composed mainly of peasants, the families of those who served were guaranteed rations, some peasants who remained at home yearned to join the Army, men, along with some women, flooded the recruitment centres.

If they were turned away they would collect scrap metal and prepare care-packages, in some cases the money they earned would go towards tanks for the Army. Nikolai Krylenko was the supreme commander-in-chief, with Aleksandr Myasnikyan as deputy, Nikolai Podvoisky became the commissar for war, Pavel Dybenko, commissar for the fleet.

Proshyan, Samoisky, Steinberg were also specified as peoples commissars as well as Vladimir Bonch-Bruyevich from the Bureau of Commissars, at a joint meeting of Bolsheviks and Left Socialist-Revolutionaries, held on 22 February , Krylenko remarked, We have no army.

The Red Guard units are brushed aside like flies and we have no power to stay the enemy, only an immediate signing of the peace treaty will save us from destruction. The situation encouraged direct Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War, a series of engagements resulted, involving, amongst others, the Czechoslovak Legion, the Polish 5th Rifle Division, and the pro-Bolshevik Red Latvian Riflemen.

The influence of the Soviet Navy played a role in the Cold War. During the revolution, sailors deserted their ships at will and generally neglected their duties, the officers were dispersed and most of the sailors left their ships.

Work stopped in the shipyards, where uncompleted ships deteriorated rapidly, the Black Sea Fleet fared no better than the Baltic. The Bolshevik revolution entirely disrupted its personnel, with murders of officers.

At the end of April , German troops entered Crimea, the more effective ships were moved from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk where, after an ultimatum from Germany, they were scuttled by Vladimir Lenins order.

The ships remaining in Sevastopol were captured by the Germans and then, after November , on 1 April , when Red Army forces captured Crimea, the British squadron had to withdraw, but before leaving they damaged all the remaining battleships and sank thirteen new submarines. When the White Army captured Crimea in , it rescued and reconditioned a few units, at the end of the civil war, Wrangels fleet, a White fleet, moved to Bizerta in French Tunisia, where it was interned.

The first ship of the navy could be considered the rebellious Imperial Russian cruiser Aurora. Sailors of the Baltic fleet supplied the fighting force of the Bolsheviks during the October Revolution, some imperial vessels continued to serve after the revolution, albeit with different names.

The Soviet Navy, established as the Workers and Peasants Red Fleet by a decree of the Soviet government, was less than service-ready during the interwar years, as the countrys attentions were largely directed internally, the Navy did not have much funding or training.

The greater part of the old fleet was sold by the Soviet government to Germany for scrap, in the Baltic Sea there remained only three much-neglected battleships, two cruisers, some ten destroyers, and a few submarines.

Despite this state of affairs, the Baltic Fleet remained a significant naval formation, there also existed some thirty minor-waterways combat flotillas. During the s, as the industrialization of the Soviet Union proceeded, approved by the Labour and Defence Council in , the Naval Shipbuilding Program included plans to construct twelve submarines, the first six were to become known as the Dekabrist class.

M, malinin, managed the submarine construction works at the Baltic Shipyard. In subsequent years, submarines were built to designs developed during Malinins management, additional developments included the formation of the Pacific Fleet in and the Northern Fleet in 6.

Internal Troops supported and reinforced the Politsiya, deal with riots, internal armed conflicts. As such, the service was involved in all conflicts and violent disturbances in modern Russia, including and First, Internal Troops fell under Armed Forces military command during wartime and fulfill the missions of local defence and rear area security.

Internal Troops consisted of volunteers and conscripts and hence the number of active service members keeps fluctuating. On the moment of their disestablishment, it had less than , active members and had had shortage of officers since and its strength plunged to this level from the peak strength of , active members.

In , these were transferred to the Cheka and in into the OGPU, however, the Internal Troops were still a part of the Soviet Armed Forces and this state of affairs pleased no one. The Armed Forces did not want to be seen as a force of internal suppression, the MVD was finding itself having to extinguish increasingly frequent and violent hot spots and to cope with growing and increasingly well organised and equipped criminals.

The law set the standards for the Internal Troops of the Russian Federation. The law is entitled On the Russian Federation Ministry of Internal Affairs Internal Troops, article 38 granted senior operational commanders the right to call in subunits of special motorized formations and military units outside their deployment areas for a period of up to one month.

The federal law also detailed the important role that the Russian Ministry of Defense played in the affairs of the MVDs Internal Troops when crises arose, despite being subordinated to civilian MVD authority, Internal Troops were a paramilitary force with centralized system of ranks, command and service.

VV units in Soviet Union were predominantly formed up of conscripts drafted by the system as for the Soviet Army. Modern Internal Troops in Russia, as in Ukraine, experienced a transition to the contract personnel system.

VV officers were trained in both own special academies and Armys military academies, the main kinds of Internal Troops were field units, various facility-guarding units, special motorized units, riot control and patrol units, and special forces like Rus 7.

This serves to clarify who can be recommended for the state awards of the Russian Federation. Commemorative awards and ministerial or departmental awards do not qualify as such, royal dynastic orders of the House of Romanov.

Defunct since Soviet Union, conferred in exile.
